For brands and wholesalers new to private label sock sourcing, the production process can feel opaque. You know what you want the finished product to look like. You know roughly what you want to pay. But the steps between "I have a design idea" and "retail-ready goods in my warehouse" aren't always clear — particularly when you're working with a manufacturer in a different country for the first time.

This guide walks through the complete private label sock production process at Anemon Socks, from the initial design brief through to finished goods leaving our Istanbul facility. The goal is to give you a clear picture of what happens at each stage, how long each stage takes, and what you need to provide or decide at each point.

Stage 1: Design Brief and Technical Review

Every production order starts with a design brief. This can take several forms depending on where you are in your product development process.

If you have a finished design file — a digital tech pack with precise colour specifications, pattern layouts, and construction notes — we work directly from that. If you have a concept, a reference image, or a general direction, our design team develops a production-ready technical file and presents it for your approval before any physical samples are produced.

At this stage, we also conduct a technical review of the design against our production parameters. For jacquard designs, this means checking colour counts against our machine capacity — up to 6 colours horizontally and 18 colours vertically on our Lonati machinery. Designs that exceed these parameters are flagged early, and we discuss whether adaptation or an alternative production technique (such as digital print on bamboo) is more appropriate.

The outcome of Stage 1 is a technically approved design file that is ready for sampling. For buyers who arrive with a finished tech pack, this stage can be completed in 2 to 3 days. For buyers who need design development support, allow 5 to 7 days.

Stage 2: Sample Production

Once the design is technically approved, we produce physical samples. This is a mandatory step for all private label orders — we do not proceed to bulk production without buyer approval of a physical sample.

The reason is simple: the gap between a digital design file and a knitted physical product can be significant. Colours shift when translated from screen to yarn. Pattern scale changes when the sock is stretched and shaped. Fine details that appear crisp on screen can lose definition in the knitting process. Physical sample approval eliminates these variables before bulk production commits material and machine time to the order.

Our sample production timeline is 7 to 14 days from design confirmation. The finished samples are sent to the buyer — typically by courier to your European address — for review and approval.

At this stage, buyers assess colour accuracy, pattern definition, fabric hand-feel, sizing, and overall product quality. If adjustments are needed, revised samples are produced. Most orders move through one or two sample rounds before bulk approval is given.

Sample production costs are charged at this stage and reimbursed in full when the bulk order is confirmed. There is no financial penalty for buyers who proceed to production.

Stage 3: Bulk Production — Knitting

Once sample approval is received, bulk production begins. The knitting stage is where the physical sock takes shape, on our Lonati computerised knitting machines across four needle counts: 144, 156, 168, and 200.

The appropriate gauge is determined by the product category and design requirements — 200 needle for premium crew socks and complex jacquard designs, 156 and 168 needle for tennis and sneaker applications. Each machine runs continuously, producing finished sock blanks at consistent speed and quality.

Our facility operates 40+ knitting machines with a monthly production capacity exceeding 300,000 pairs. For a standard order of 1,500 pairs — our minimum order quantity per SKU — the knitting stage is completed efficiently within the overall production timeline.

Quality control at the knitting stage covers yarn tension, colour accuracy, pattern alignment, and structural integrity. Any pairs that don't meet specification are removed from the production run.

Stage 4: Toe Linking

After knitting, each sock blank has an open toe that needs to be closed. Toe linking is the process of joining the toe seam — and the quality of this process directly affects the comfort of the finished product.

At Anemon Socks, toe linking is performed with precision seaming that creates a smooth, flat join. A poorly linked toe creates a visible ridge against the foot that is immediately noticeable to the consumer. This is one of the finishing details that separates premium sock production from commodity manufacturing — and it's worth asking any manufacturer specifically how their toe linking is done.

Stage 5: Industrial Washing and Finishing

This is the stage that most buyers don't see — and it's where a significant portion of the quality difference between manufacturers is created.

After knitting and toe linking, socks go through our in-house industrial washing and finishing line. This is not a simple rinse cycle. The process involves:

Industrial washing at controlled temperatures with eco-friendly softening agents. The wash cycle is calibrated specifically for each yarn blend — the temperature, duration, and chemistry are set to achieve dimensional stability and shrinkage control without damaging the fabric structure or affecting colour vibrancy. At Anemon Socks, our standard wash cycle runs at 30 degrees, optimised for the yarn types we use.

Automated drying under controlled conditions to prevent shape distortion. Uneven drying can cause patterned socks to shift out of alignment — the visual pattern on the finished sock doesn't match the design brief because the fabric dried unevenly under tension.

Steam boarding shapes each pair to precise sizing matrices. Every sock is placed on a form that corresponds to its intended size and steamed to set the shape. This gives the finished product its structured, retail-ready appearance and ensures consistent sizing across the production run.

Industrial ironing provides the final dimensional set and controls shrinkage to within retail tolerance.

The outcome of this stage is a finished sock that holds its shape, maintains its colour, and will continue to perform correctly after repeated consumer washes. Socks that skip or rush this stage look fine in the warehouse but underperform in the consumer's hands — which creates returns, complaints, and brand damage that no price saving at the manufacturing stage justifies.

Stage 6: Quality Control and Pairing

After finishing, every pair goes through a final quality control inspection. This covers dimensional accuracy against the approved size spec, colour consistency across the production run, pattern alignment, seam quality, and overall presentation.

Pairs that don't meet specification are removed. The accepted pairs are matched — left and right are checked for consistency — and prepared for the packaging stage.

Stage 7: Packaging and Labelling

This is where your brand identity comes to life on the finished product. At Anemon Socks, we operate a complete in-house packaging line that handles every element of retail-ready presentation:

Branded header cards printed with your logo, brand identity, and any required retail information. If you provide print-ready artwork, we produce the cards. If you need design support, our team can develop header card layouts for your approval.

Self-adhesive wrap-around bands in your brand colours and identity, applied to each pair.

Hangtags, hooks, and labels as specified by your retail partner's requirements.

Protective polybagging for individual pairs or multipacks as required.

EAN/UPC barcoding precisely applied and verified for scanner compliance with European retail systems. We handle barcode allocation and application in-house.

Master carton boxing optimised for your logistics requirements — dimensions and weight specifications can be aligned to your freight partner's requirements or to standard European pallet configurations.

The finished goods that leave our facility are shelf-ready. They require no additional sorting, labelling, or packaging work at your end before they go to retail or distribution.

Stage 8: Export Documentation and Logistics

Anemon Socks works on an EXW (Ex Works) basis — meaning goods are available for collection from our Terazidere, Bayrampaşa facility in Istanbul, and the buyer arranges and pays for onward freight.

However, we work with established freight partners who provide competitive rates for road, air, and sea freight to European destinations. We pass these rates directly to our buyers with no markup — you pay exactly what we pay for the freight. For buyers who want a simpler commercial arrangement, we can also organise DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) logistics, handling freight, customs clearance, and delivery to your specified address in Europe.

All EUR.1 movement certificates — which enable preferential customs treatment under the EU-Turkey Customs Union — are handled in-house. This is important for European buyers: EUR.1 certification can reduce or eliminate import duties on goods entering the EU from Turkey, depending on the product category.

Road freight from Istanbul to Germany takes approximately 3 to 4 days. To the Netherlands, 3 to 5 days. To the UK, 5 to 6 days.
